Give Back to Delray Beach Cultural Centers

Monday, May 4, 2020 - 8:49am
Coined as the "Most fun small town in the U.S.,” Delray Beach couldn't claim that title without our beloved Art & Cultural hubs. These cultural centers are the places that connect Delray Beach through live performances, gallery exhibitions, classes, and so much more…and will be even more valuable for connecting us as we emerge from this crisis.  They provide entertainment for residents and visitors alike and offer opportunities to be a part of something bigger.  They preserve the architectural, memories, nature, and history of Delray Beach that we know and love with a bit of style and flair, maintaining our Authentically Vibrant Village by the Sea.

Now more than ever we need to help preserve these cultural centers, that are the essence of our unique Delray Beach vibe.

The unique facility offers hands-on learning experiences, which focus on Florida’s fragile ecosystems and their inhabitants. Meet sharks and other fish at the coral reef pool, explore Southeast Florida’s largest private shell collection and join us for special events such as Earth Day and beach clean-ups. The center’s library is a great resource to explore natural history and the environment. The observation deck, shell collection and native plant and butterfly garden also allow the visitor to learn about our unique coastal environment.

What they are all about: The Delray Beach Children's Garden was created to nurture eco-consciousness in children. We believe that given the opportunity to learn, play and explore in nature, children will grow up wanting to be environmental stewards. We also understand the positive impact a greenspace can have on a community.

From the start, the founding committee believed that a garden for children should include children in the design and build. Children have been an integral part of creating what the garden has to offer today, from serving as judges at our design charrette, to working as volunteers throughout the build. The land, leased to us from St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, has been transformed into an eco-wonderland and thriving community garden and nature center through the support of countless volunteers and supporters.

Garden Features:  Veggie Garden Labyrinth, Rare and Tropical Fruit Trees, Fish and Turtle pond, Twig Tunnel, Banana Forest, Well Wishes Healing Garden, Interactive weather and solar power stations, Adventure Boat, Dream Garden, Giant Storytelling Chair with a Treasure Chest Library, Shade Lounge, and the Simon Grass River Chickee Hut for classes, celebrations and gatherings.

How you can support them: The Children's Garden as many options for helping them plant seeds of goodness!  Find out more donating details here:  http://www.delraybeachchildrensgarden.org/support

HELPING HANDS (H3)

Hospitality Helping Hands (H3) is a recently organized network of three established Delray not-for-profits (Living Hungry, the Delray Beach Homelessness Task Force, WiseTribe) and two established restaurants, Dada and Subculture Coffee. Together they are cutting through the complexity of closed schools, social distancing, job loss, and disrupted supply chains to deliver food to those most in need.

The concept is simple. Restaurants and not-for-profits band together to establish community kitchens to produce and distribute healthy, nutritious meals to children, the elderly and the needy and at the same time provide some limited employment to our suffering restaurant colleagues. We are striving to take the fear of “where do I get my next meal” away from everyone who is suffering emotionally and financially.

 RESTAURANTS FEEDING SENIORS

From March 18th—20th, downtown Delray Beach restaurants: Prime Delray, Pizza Rustica, Tin Roof, The Office Delray, Sazio Express, Two Fat Cookies, Caffe Luna Rosa and Rose's Daughter donated 300 meals to homebound seniors who normally visit Pompey Park and Veterans Park Monday through Friday for complimentary lunch. With the newly implemented social distancing requirements due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19), these complementary lunches were put on hold. These restaurants stepped up and all meals were delivered by Delray Beach's Freebee cart and the City of Delray Beach Parks and Recreation department assisted with the delivery of meals to 100 homebound seniors.

Thank you to the restaurants donating 100 meals a day for our local seniors!

FAQs of Unemployment

Friday, April 3, 2020 - 12:28pm

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS REGARDING UNEMPLOYMENT

I’ve lost my job or my hours have been reduced due to the coronavirus pandemic. Can I get unemployment benefits?

Yes. Go to https://connect.myflorida.com or call 1-800-204-2418 to apply. Those who are eligible will be able to get up to $275 per week for up to 12 weeks in state unemployment benefits, as well as an additional $600 per week for up to four months in federal benefits.

I’m having trouble getting through to Florida’s unemployment benefits website. What should I do?

This is a frequent complaint due to the large number of applicants. The Governor’s office is in charge, and they told us they are working urgently to improve the site. I will continue to press the issue.

I am self-employed or an independent contractor. Do these benefits apply to me?

Yes, thanks to a new federal law, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Go to https://connect.myflorida.com or call 1-800-204-2418 to apply.

My small business is suffering as a result of the pandemic. What resources are available to me?

There are a number of different opportunities. The new Paycheck Protection Program provides assistance to employers to maintain their payroll and expenses during this public health emergency. These will be available retroactively from Feb. 15, 2020.

Beginning on April 3rd, businesses can go to a participating SBA 7(a) lender, bank, or credit union, apply for a loan, and be approved on the same day. These loans feature eight weeks fully forgivable funds to cover payroll, rent, utilities, and mortgage interest.

Small businesses are also eligible to apply online for immediate relief through Economic Injury Disaster Loans for an advance of up to $10,000 within three days, and Emergency Bridge Loans to help bridge the short-term gap in resources available. Subscribe to SBA emails for updates on available webinars and other resources.

I heard the government will be sending checks to people. How do I know if I qualify and when will I get my payment?

If you make $75,000 ($150,000 for married couples) or less per year, you will receive a payment of $1,200, with an additional $500 per child (16 and under). This payment decreases as incomes increase and stops entirely at $99,000 ($198,000 for married couples).

Payments will be issued by the IRS via direct deposit and will be based on your 2019 tax returns. If you have not filed for 2019 yet, then it will be based on your 2018 filling. If the IRS does not have your bank account information on file there will be an opportunity to submit this information to the IRS online. If you do not typically file a tax return, you will likely need to file a simple tax return to receive the economic assistance.

I’m on Social Security. Will I still get a stimulus check?

Yes. Everyone is eligible for the payments as long as they have a social security number and meet the household incomes limits listed above. This includes Social Security beneficiaries (retirement, disability, survivor) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients. You will receive this money the same way you receive your Social Security payments.
