Call to Artists - Arts Warehouse Exhibit

Tuesday, July 25, 2017 - 12:52pm

The Arts Warehouse is one of the Delray Beach CRA’s newest and most exciting projects. In 2010, the CRA purchased a 15,000 sq. ft. warehouse in the Pineapple Grove Arts District for conversion to an arts center/business incubator. The project implements the Arts-Based Economic Development Program identified in the Community Redevelopment Plan and the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The promotion of the arts and accommodation of cultural activities in the Pineapple Grove area enhances Delray’s image as an arts destination which will further contribute to the City’s economy. The facility may accommodate uses such as: studios for rent by local and visiting artists; gallery and exhibit space; classroom and workshop space; food preparation area for catering events on site; administrative offices; and space for rent to businesses that will collaborate with and/or provide support services to artists. In June 2014 the CRA selected the local architectural firm of Currie, Sowards, Aguila to design the improvements to convert the warehouse to suit the various uses. The project is currently under construction.

As a prelude to launching our annual juried exhibit program at the Arts Warehouse (Delray Beach, Florida). We are announcing a Special Call to Artist in celebration of the Arts Warehouse 1st Exhibit. We are seeking professional artists who live or work in Delray Beach and the entire Palm Beach County to create/submit an iconic work of art that symbolizes “A Day in the Life of Delray Beach”. The Call is open to all Palm Beach County residents; one submission per artist. Artwork selected will be featured in the Inaugural Exhibit at the Arts Warehouse. Images of artworks and artist may be featured in upcoming promotions and press as part of the opening of the Arts Warehouse.

Artwork must be dedicated specifically for the theme of “A Day in the Life of Delray Beach”. All two-dimensional media is acceptable for submission including paintings, prints, drawings, photography, collage, textiles, metal, assemblage, ceramic relief and mixed media.

Criteria for the Call are as follows:

Judging will be based upon overall quality, creativity and vision of each work.

 Professional Artists who are eligible to apply must be residents of Palm Beach County. Residents of the City of Delray Beach will be given first consideration for this exhibit.

 Work submitted must be the theme of “A Day in the Life of Delray Beach”. *Please note while we love the beach we are not looking for all “beach” related work. There is a lot happening in Delray Beach, from architecture, to music, to schools, communities and more!

 All images must be 300 dpi or higher.

 All images must include artist’s name, title, date, medium, size in file name and a very brief 3-4 sentence paragraph explaining what the “Day in the Life of Delray Beach” moment captures. Please put all this information on one page.

EMAIL IMAGE & INFORMATION TO: Jill Brown by August 11, 2017: brownji@mydelraybeach.com
Accepted Work:

 Artists will be notified on or before August 18, 2017. Please no phone calls or emails.

 After work has been accepted, a substitution cannot be made nor a change in the artwork or titles as submitted.

 Artists will be providing the rights of the image to be used by the Delray Beach CRA and the Arts Warehouse for promotional use.

 Artwork must remain up the entire show. Pick up times will be provided.

 The Artist can select to sell the work on exhibit. An Artist’s Sales Agreement must be executed prior to exhibiting the art with the Delray Beach CRA/Arts Warehouse. The Sales Agreement will be provided prior to the exhibit.
The warehouse is still under construction so exact dates of the show may vary. Artist selected will be informed of the following as building completion get closer:
1. Drop off and Pick Up dates
2. Exact dates of Show – tentatively scheduled for End of August – October/September

For more information on the Arts Warehouse, please visit our project page at https://delraycra.org/portfolio_page/arts-warehouse/

Delray Beach Master Plan Update: Week of July 24, 2017

Monday, July 24, 2017 - 10:45am

The work-zone area between Boston's north to the main Pavilion is open to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. In order to provide continual public safety for the residents and guests attending the beachfront, beach access is available at the main Pavilion and at Thomas Street designated crosswalks. The Marriott Hotel pedestrian crosswalk is closed to pedestrian traffic and access to the beach.

On street parking north of the Marriott Hotel to Thomas Street is not permitted at this time. The contractor moved their new work-zone  between the Marriott Hotel north to Thomas Street and will begin construction of the flag pole area in the near future. Additionally, underground utility construction continues in this area.

It is very important that folks accessing the beach only use the identified access points, which provide safe entry. These safe entry points are currently located by the Sandoway parking lot, the main Pavilion, and the Thomas Street designated crosswalk.

A third Downtown Roundabout trolley between the parking garages and the beach is available. A map of the new route is accessible on the City's website at www.mydelraybeach.com or by clicking here.

New parking meters are installed along the beachfront at the southern end of the municipal beach from Casuarina Road going north to Boston's on the Beach. While visitors have enjoyed free parking in this area for a few weeks, please note that the meters may be operational in the near future for parallel parking in this area.

Beach Promenade benches, plaques and stone memorials have been removed and safely stored. Any donor of the same should contact Isaac Kovner at 561-243-7000, ext. 4119, to discuss options for future location.

Upcoming Activities:

  • If you have any questions concerning the use of the smart meters when parallel parking please contact Jorge Alarcon at the City of Delray Beach, (561) 243-7000, ext. 4112.
  • Demolition, underground piping, and backfilling for the new showers and fountains between the Marriott Hotel and Thomas Street have started.
  • The pouring of all three concrete colors for the sidewalk continues.

Parking:

Parking has been restored on the southern end of the municipal beach from Casuarina Road to the beginning of the current work zone at Boston's. While these spots have been free for the past couple of weeks, smart meters have now been installed and will be operational in the next week. Parking on A1A adjacent to the municipal beach is $1.50 per hour and, in this area, cars are limited to a four-hour stay.

As construction continues on the Promenade, certain on-street parking spaces along the beach will remain unavailable. However, we will continue to make every effort to make parking alternatives accessible whenever possible. Parking in all public parking lots along the beach, including the Sandoway parking lot, will continue to be available.

For those who choose to park in public parking garages, a third trolley has been added with a new route featuring stops at the parking garages and additional stops along the beach to accommodate beach-goers.

Bicycle lanes:

Bicyclists will be able to use the bicycle lane, but we urge extra caution in this area.  The bicycle lane on South Ocean Boulevard will be narrowed with barriers to protect the general public from the construction activities.

Worksite Safety:

The contractor has secured the Beach Promenade area on the north end of the beach to create two safe zones - one for protected sidewalk and beach access for the public and one for protection of the construction site. Directional and informational signage is present. Also, a safe zone for construction is established on the south end of the beach. Utility structures, irrigation, electrical and existing trees are protected from construction activities.

Public notifications concerning sidewalk closures are posted. The contractor is working with the public on providing safe entry to the beach through designated areas within the construction zone.

Contact information:

For questions concerning parking during construction, please contact Jorge Alarcon at (561) 243-7000 ext. 4112.

For the trolley service, please contact Xavier Falconi at (561) 243-7000 ext. 4113.

For general questions concerning the construction, please contact Isaac Kovner at (561) 243-7000 ext. 4119.

Stay informed with weekly up-to-date information by visiting our website (www.mydelraybeach.com) and information boards.

The City apologizes for any inconvenience the construction may impose.  We thank you for your patience and understanding.

Delray Beach Master Plan Update: Week of July 17, 2017

Monday, July 17, 2017 - 2:48pm

New parking meters have now been installed along the beachfront at the southern end of the municipal beach from Casuarina Road going north to Boston's On the Beach. While visitors have enjoyed free parking in this area for a few weeks, please note that the meters will be operational this week for parallel parking in this area.

The work-zone area between Boston's north to the Marriott Hotel is closed to all pedestrian traffic in order to provide continual public safety for the residents and guests attending the beachfront. Beach access is available at both the Sandoway Parking Lot and at the Marriott Hotel designated cross walks.

On-street parking by Boston's north to the Marriott Hotel, including the ADA parking spaces along with the main pavilion, is not accessible until the construction is completed in the work zone area.

The contractor continues to pour all three color concrete concepts in the current work zone, between Bostons and the Marriott Hotel, along with renovating the main pavilion and flag pole area. Additionally, underground utility construction continues in this area.

It is very important that folks accessing the beach only use the identified access points, which provide safe entry. These safe entry points are currently located by the Sandoway parking lot, and the Marriott Hotel designated crosswalks.

A third Downtown Roundabout trolley between the parking garages and the Beach is available. A map of the new route is accessible on the City's website at www.mydelraybeach.com or by clicking here.

  • Underground piping and backfilling for the new showers and fountains between Boston's continues.
  • The pouring of all three concrete colors for the sidewalk will continue.
